Aquaponics is the joining of Aquaculture (raising of fish) and Hydroponics (growing of plants without soil) together in a symbiotic relationship which can provide an endless flow of healthy organic produce and protein.

For fish to survive and grow in a tank, they need food and clean water. Aquaponics works when the biological waste water from the fish is circulated through the roots of the plants, where benificial bacteria convert the waste into usable plant nutrients. The clean water is then recirculated into the fish tank and the process repeats itself. Both the fish and the plants grow within simple sytem requiring very little water and energy inputs.

Backyard Harvest is excited to be partnering with Shwava Food Production Systems Inc. in the development of a portable aquaponic system that will be used for demonstration and educational purposes.

Along with all the fruits and vegetables Backyard Harvest will be collecting, we will soon be harvesting Talapia from our own backyards as well.
