With education being a core principle of Backyard Harvest, our Service Learning Program aims to help increase our youth's awareness focused on food related issues. Our program offers professionally led 2 to 3 hour field trips for classes to one of our partnering residential farms. There, children will not only have a tour of the orchard and garden, seeing the dozens of varieties of food growing, they will also visit the chicken coop and learn about bees and the important role they play in our food sysytem. A demonstartion of a working hive will be led by an local beekeeper. Students will receive both an ecological and nutritional education through this experience as well as work at harvesting some of the food which may end up on the tables of thier own classmates. A tour of the Unity Shoppe facility completes the vital social component of the program. Grab your cargo bike, trailer, rack & panniers and help deliver food by bicycle. Backyard Harvest has collected 20,000 lbs of fresh produce from vendors at the Farmers Market. Meet at Wheelhouse @ 528 Anacapa and help pedal some of this much needed produce to various downtown agencies serving in-need residents. Join us and get your free BYH t-shirt. |
